The RAM is used to store samples for the EMU8K. For gaming, it is primarily used for MIDI music and in Windows you can use SF2 SoundFonts with larger amounts of RAM (up to 28 MB). It can be used for MOD style tracker as well, but that kind of usage is rare with the EMU8K.
