Configuring an SB16 sound card with the SBPro option won't give you stereo separation. If the issue is related to HDMA, then the OP's sound card may have the Vibra16XV chip which affects compatibility with some DOS games when selecting the SB16 option.

The RAM is used to store samples for the EMU8K. For gaming, it is primarily used for MIDI music and in Windows you can use SF2 SoundFonts with larger amounts of RAM (up to 28 MB). It can be used for MOD style tracker as well, but that kind of usage is rare with the EMU8K.

Seems that the motherboard where the AWE32 is installed couldn't handle NMIs as AWEUTIL relies on it for the emulation to work. Edit: Which version of AWEUTIL do you have?

The MPU-401 hanging note bug depends on the AWE32 variant, those with the CT-1747 bus chip are quite useable. The emulation thru the EMU8K isn't affected by this. But yeah, nearly all clones are bug-free on that regard.

The improvements in the Pentium were the UV pipeline and faster FPU, it didn't have a dramatic impact for consumers because nearly all software back then didn't take advantage of these. Quake (the original DOS release) was the first game properly optimized for that CPU.

No, S3 ViRGE doesn't handle non-power of two amounts of VRAM. You need memory chips that allows you to reach 4 MB for 1024x768x24 and 1280x1024x16 screen resolutions.
