Re: Which AT motherboard to get

Thanks for all your input. I have decided to look for the original TX97, since it has 4 ISA slots and is an AT board. If I don't find that one, I'd probably try the TX97-XE, which 5u3 has recommended. Well, EDO RAM would have been nice, because I have some of that memory lying around. Guess, I'll …

Re: Which AT motherboard to get

Hi! Thanks for your reply. I'd have to get a new case and power supply for ATX then. I recently thought about buying an ASUS TX97 (pic), but they seem to make rare appearances on eBay. With ATX as form factor it shouldn't be a problem to find a suiteble board, I guess. Regards, locutus

Which AT motherboard to get

Hello! I have a simple question: I am looking for an AT (!) Pentium I motherboard that has some Intel chipset, at least 4 ISA slots and 3 PCI slots, of which one may be shared between the two busses. It should also support EDO RAM and most importantly it should support at least 3 full-length ISA …

Re: Why we haven't moved to 64 bit?

I once read that the leap from 16 to 32-bit was much bigger than the change from 32-bit to 64-bit. Apparently, numbers that are so big that they would need 64-bit to fit into one register are not very common. Hence, speed increase is only marginally, I guess.

Re: Little programmer's corner

At first it is necessary to create a window. There's a good tutorial about it on winprog.org . This GDI article on the MSDN should get you there :-) I suggest you start reading about "Device Contexts", "Bitmaps", "Brushes" and "Rectangles" for an introduction. http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/ …

Re: Little programmer's corner

Yes, you'd probably have to build SDL from source and statically link it into your program. I believe there's a command-line switch for GCC to do that... "-mstatic" perhaps? PS: Let me know if something good came out of the merge of your source code with mine ;-)

Re: Little programmer's corner

Hello kekko, nice programming! If you are interested in using only Windows functions for drawing (GDI) you might want to have a look at my tiny pong clone , which is also written in C using DevCpp. I wrote it to learn how to use graphics and sound routines from the Win32 interface. If you used GDI …

Re: Best DOS video card?

Matrox and Tseng chipsets weren't that exotic to my knowledge. The ET6000 chipset for example (used by VideoLogic, Hercules among others) were best known for their speed and performance under DOS. But you are certainly right, if you say that S3 graphics cards were very compatible.

Re: Best DOS video card?

What happens on Episode IV and above that makes the game unplayable, by the way? I mean, does the resolution mode change in such way that makes the game unplayable? Well, some kind of tearing takes place when walking left or right (horizontal scrolling). The whole screen flickers and it's not …

Re: Best DOS video card?

Hello! I have built an old DOS computer to play classic games on and found out that there are many differences between video cards (Yes, even between 2D cards). Some of them tend to have problems when it comes to scrolling (best noticable with horizontal scrolling). The Matrox cards (including …

Re: Yamaha S-YXG series of sound synthesizers

in Windows
Yep, this seems to be an upgrade only: from http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_1999_Dec_24/ai_58357283 : "PC users owning Yamaha's SoftSynthesizer S-YXG50, S-YXG70 or S-YXG100plus will be able to upgrade to S-YXG/DM (DirectMusic-compatible SoftSynthesizer) using the upgrade module …
