Re: fat16 vs fat32

DOS/9x FAT16=2gb partitions sizes. NT4/2000 can use 4gb FAT16 partitions size. Doesn't really matter to me... my drives are only 1.6gb a piece, so FAT16 is fine. I was just wondering if FAT32 was significantly faster (which according to most responses here it is not) and if there would be some …

fat16 vs fat32

I have a Pentium 100 machine running DOS 6.22 and Win 3.1 that I strictly use for gaming -- I want to add Win95 with a dual-boot configuration. Here's the thing -- I've been told to get OSR2.5 (Win95 "C"), as it clears up most of Win95's bugs and supports FAT32. Obviously, DOS 6.22 is running on a …

cuteMouse and Windows 3.1

I use cuteMouse to drive a PS/2 Mouse on my Dos 6.22/Win 3.1 system. In Dos, no problem -- cutemouse works great and my mouse works in all my Dos apps and games. But when I start win 3.1, the mouse stops working -- the pointer just sits dead center on the screen and will not move. Any ideas???

Re: end of my rope...

GREAT IDEA, JORPHO!!! Turns out the connector wasn't broken, just wired incorrectly. I tested the contacts against the diagram I THOUGHT told me how to wire it, turns out the diagram was completely wrong! The only wire that was right was the 5v power wire, which is why the optical mouse light turned …

Re: end of my rope...

I wired the connector according to the specs from the connector manufacturer and the motherboard manufacturer. As I said, I've also swapped motheboards, so I doubt I have two bad headers in a row. I've also tested the wires on the motherboard to ps/2 connector for continuity - no problem there. I've …

end of my rope...

Ok -- I took a break from this problem and now I'm back to it, and it is quite persistent. I actually swapped motherboards to see if maybe I had a bad PS/2 mouse header. I'm now using an FIC PT-2200. I checked the BIOS and the PS/2 mouse support is turned on. FIC publishes the pinouts for the PT- …

Best O/S for PII?

Well, after building up a stock of parts for my Pentium-100 and PIII projects, I had enough leftover parts to put together a pretty bangin' PII-400 system as well. Here are the specs: Enlight case w/250-watt P/S ASUS P2B Mobo Intel PII-400 256MB PC-100 SDRAM IBM Deskstar 14GXP HDD Toshiba XM6702B …

ps/2 optical mouse issue

Hi all -- So, I decided to use a mouse on my Pentium-100 DOS machine. I didn't originally see this as a big decision. However, I'd like to use an optical mouse. And for some reason right now, maybe because I'm using off-brand mice, I can't get DOS to recognize any mouse at all through my PS/2 port. …

IT... IS .... ALIVE!!!!

OK, so as a last ditch effort, I bought a conductive paint pen to go over some of the traces that were close enough to the battery to be possibly affected by the corrosion. While they did not appear to me to be damaged, apparently they were. Going over them with the conductive paint fixed the …

Re: CMOS battery problem, the sequel

jthieme, I should say that is not my exact board. That is my make and model of board. However, the corrosion on that battery is all over the battery, contacts, and has even spread over to the adjacent screw hole. I don't have anywhere near that amount of corrosion on mine.

Re: CMOS battery problem, the sequel

HAL, the only jumper settings I have to go on are the ones in the text file posted above. I have no manual and Supermicro doesn't have any either (their tech support guy is very nice, but so far hasn't had any helpful info for me). There are quite a few "factory configured / do not alter" jumpers -- …

Re: CMOS battery problem, the sequel

jthieme, the board header has a "+" sign on one end, where I connected the red wire. I'd only reverse it after I'd exhausted other options. HAL, I connected the battery, turned the computer on and off and saved CMOS settings in almost every possible configuration. I then tried using the clear CMOS …

Re: CMOS battery problem, the sequel

HAL, the old NiCd had a little bit of white corrosion on one end, but nothing terrible -- I clipped it off and brushed off what little of the corrosion dust had reached the board -- is it possible the corrosion could make it so the board won't recognize any battery anymore? Even one that attaches to …
