Elyts tend to dry out and loose capacity, tantals tend to explode when not used for a long time and suddenly powered up 😀 It's mostly power filtering, you can use elyts with similar or lower ESR or better polymer caps...

You can check your soundcard from DOS via MPXplay, the SB EMU10kx drivers used in Mpxplay should be the same as in SBEMU. I use SB Audigy, that is very similar to SB Live and it plays correctly.

What kind of microcode is talked about? Does RV GPU chip has it's own microcode? Is is distributed separately from the driver? So driver code can load different uc files? I didn't explore verite dos drivers structure yet... where to download most rcent/best working drivers?

X=TEST may not work 100% reliable on obscure platforms. You may try manually exclude the biggest address region of A000-FFFF if it helps and then try to narrow the regions that needs to be excluded. Deails are in JEMM readme.

You can check with e.g. HWinfo for DOS if IRQ5 is used by some PCI device. Having same IRQ for LPT and sound seems to work smoothly.

BTW other OSes can be usually booted from plain DOS via GRUB4DOS, so you can configure your HW with DOS utils, call GRUB4DOS.EXE and chainload other OS like NT. It can be all automated in autoexec.bat and grub menu.lst to select some boot item within a given timeout.

I think 4MB is good for 2D truecolor mode up to 1024x768. And with 60Hz LCD the 135MHz RAMDAC is more than enough...

On your board irq 3 was probably shared by more devices so as you freed irq 5 it moved one device from irq 3 to 5 to avoid sharing. Maybe it would be possible to disable device taking irq 5 after boot by some control registers?
