Try downloading this http://files.pixelz.org/dosboxcvs.zip version and see if the game works any better. This is the newest version of CVS, updated every 2 days or so, but unsupported.

That still doesn't explain the not loading, of course, but I suspect the game simply isn't supported yet.

I would post a picture of Quest for Glory 4, but I don't have good hosting. It does work, although it is without sound.

your best alternative is probably just to set up your computer as a dualboot system. it might be too difficult for you, but maybe you can get your "computer-tech guy" (groan) to help you. makes more sense than buying a whole new computer.
