Re: help identifying a tseng 1986 graphics adapter

in Marvin \ Video
Multi-I/O card ? They often contained all basic features like Real-Time Clock/parallel/serial/RAM. This one seems to have two serial port chips (?). Sorry, hard to tell. Please also make a photo of the connectors. DB-25 was once used for both serial and parallel ports, while DB9 was used for serial …

Re: Can't run Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel

in DOS
But either way Police Quest 1 original version can work under XP Command Prompt since it didn't have any special requirements nor the original PC version support sound cards. I don't know anything about Police Quest 1, but original Larry 1 and KingsQuest III do have their issues running from XP …

Re: DOSBox or Windows 98 in VMware for MS-DOS games?

in DOS
VMWare is mainly for corporate stuff. Win 9x, on ther other hand, is a consumer's product. I assume that's why there's little interest in supporting it specifically. Basic compatibility incl. 2D graphics is provided, after all.

Re: A new soldering iron and stand :)

Just looking on eBay, you can find nice used soldering stations from Hakko, Pace, Weller, and Metcal.[..] I'm a happy user of an Weller Magnastat TCP 24. It operates at a fixed temperature, but has a mechnism against overheating. My model was made in the 70s, the same era films like Silent Running …

Re: Sound Blaster Emulator for Dos?

in Milliways
I think the DOS SB emulator must run in REAL DOS or 98SE DOS and possibly function in FreeDOS as well. It would make use of the 1MB->4GB memory region which should be plenty of space for the program. There's the catch - TSRs have to be "ran through" by DOS. Hence, they have to be located in a spot …

Re: Sound Blaster Emulator for Dos?

in Milliways
But I do agree that USB sound is probably today the best single target for a universal emulator as it can be attached to any computer with USB and the interface is standard and will not change as long as USB is around.. Um, I don't mean to start a fight or something, but.., well.. USB has got …

I believe there's at least one "USB to LPT" project that aims to provide a true parallel port. Converter From USB To Parallel https://www-user.tu-chemnitz.de/~heha/basteln/PC/USB2LPT/ Cloning instructions (English) USB2LPT Release 1.0 USB2LPT Release 1.1 USB2LPT Release 1.2 USB2LPT Release 1.3 …

Re: Any Commodore 64 or Amiga fans here at Vogons?

in Milliways
C64 for SID/Adventures. Amiga for MOD files, etc. Nice post! One of the main attractions of the Amiga 1000 for me back in 1985 was that 4 channel digital audio. A few years later when I was doing live gigs with an industrial electronic band I used an Amiga 500 on stage for drum tracks. I can't …

Re: Any Commodore 64 or Amiga fans here at Vogons?

Well, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to call myself beeing a fan.. Me and my father never really heard of the C64 beeing popular until that retro wave came along. Yes, belive it or not. The C64 was something we skipped. We were like from another reality or something, haha. My father and me grew …

Re: How reliable compact flash is?

in Milliways
I suspect that SD cards are more often the victims of counterfeiter than CF cards let alone due to their sheer mass circulation. SD does not have any logic, its a dumb medium that if written to the same block many times over will die pretty soon; how did You check that it is not the FS that died …

Re: Identify this 8 bit card

in Marvin \ Video
Cool! So many CGA/MDA chipsets.. :-D I wonder, is there a CGA Compatibility tester ? I mean, one that does test for Plantronics modes , as well ? From what I heard, while reading several data sheets, is, that this mode was often supported "secretly" (as in silently, on a side note). Similar to other …

Re: Sound Blaster Vibra 16 won't work with DOS.

in Marvin \ Sound
It plays all sound in Windows just fine, including music, midi, and even sound from videos like AVI or MPEG, and plays audio cd's just fine. (I am running 3.1). [..] Configuration manager tells me "Audio card is configured at A220 I5DI HI" every time DOS boots.. What happens if you do 16Bit …
