The pin 1 is marked on the motherboard, where you can see the A1 note on the silk screen. There you should align the CPU at. Inserting it otherwise will at least make it fail to boot, possibly damaging both CPU and motherboard due to short circuit. Socket 3 lif is unusual but not impossible. Also …

The CPU I have has 3 rows of pins on it, and the socket on the mainboard of the laptop is black with 3 rows of pin holes. This does not look like the socket I see on Socket 3 motherboards ?

CuteFTP does work but with no way to register old versions this is not a good long term solution so what do I do ?

And an update.. The system works almost 100% as it should with the replacement CPU linked in my last post. One weird thing is the UDMA mode for both the optical drive and the SD to IDE Adaptor seem to be stuck in Mode 2. The Adaptor runs in mode 4 on my socket 7 system ?

The issue with voltage does that affect Katmai Pentium III's as well ? or is it just Coppermine that simply will not work ?
