I remember working on a guy's PC which was a 423 1.6GHz Willamette, with SDRAM. It was a real dog. The whole system just seemed sluggish. Agreed, my first P4 was about the same, but it was a 478 Willamette... Pretty woeful stuff. Obviously an RDRAM 423 system would be the one to go for but they …

Older editions of Upgrading and Repairing PCs are freakin awesome! They go into pretty gory detail on stuff like choosing RAM, esoteric BIOS options, and so forth. I've ordered the 1996 edition for 1p plus delivery. Bargain!

That's a good question. I'll have to check it out tonight, I don't even know if I have expanded enabled. In other news, I'm thinking I might put my newly acquired Vibra16S into the Pentium rig, so the P3 rig can have the SB Live and play with sound fonts.

If it's actually running off the VLB, it should be a pretty good step up from an ISA card of any sort... but compared to other VLB cards it's nothing particularly special. That's what I wanted to hear! :P Keeping my feelers out for a VLB ET4000 or something, but this sounds like it will be a decent …

Yeah, it looks like it's a VGA card and Multi I/O card in one. I'm just left wondering how the card is designed. Is it an ISA video card with a VLB IO controller? VLB video card with ISA IO controller? VLB everything? Guess i'd just have to try it and see... Is the CL-GD5426 any good on its own?

So the VLB video card is no good? I'd be putting it into that 486DX2 box that currently has an ISA Stealth24 card in it. I have to admit I've never had much luck with Cirrus Logic cards in the past.

But it sounds like yours just runs ISA at 8MHz async to the system bus. If you've got jumpers to change it you can try fiddling with it and you can probably get even higher scores, although I found my ET4000 didn't like going above 12MHz.
