Re: Porting DOS games to modern platforms

in DOS
I have finally found some time to make a demonstration video how a game can be completely rewritten into C++ in less than 25 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fAeUx8A-OE Wow, that was really impressive. Thanks for sharing this! :slightly_smiling_face: By the way, have you played with Ghidra …

Re: Has Anyone Ever Seen/Heard of a DigiSpeech Plus?

Given how LGR got music and digital audio to work simultaneously in Simcity 2000 on Windows 3.1, it would seem like a software issue (perhaps in just the emulator) and not a hardware limitation. Again, this is a device that screams out for a reverse-engineering/recreation project. Also, I second …

about electric vehicles and the possible longevity advantages I read that Nissan warrants that its electric car batteries will last eight years or 100,000 miles that's pretty good, but also I know of many cars where the engine is good for 200k+, however the cost is all about whether replacing the …

Re: Has Anyone Ever Seen/Heard of a DigiSpeech Plus?

LGR has released a comprehensive review of this device https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf39mEPUuJA That was an enjoyable video. However, I wished he would have put the Digispeech DS201 (the earlier model with the serial interface) through its paces too. He only showed one briefly, but it was not …

Re: GUS Frustrations

Well, one particular frustration I remember havin g with the GUS was lack of support in some games. The most egregious example was Theme Park. The setup program had about the longest selection list of sound cards that I had ever seen in a game, including quite obscure ones such as the Sound Master, …

Re: What is your unconscious motive for retro hardware ?

in Milliways
Why, the warm and fuzzy blanket of childhood and teenage nostalgia, of course! 🥰 I'm guessing it's probably the same for most other people here. But within the nostalgia, I personally have also noticed a bit of a unique interest in something more specific, namely the fun of seeing old technology …

Re: What do you drive?

That sounds like a European problem. Around here, we don't have any specific taxes. We don't even have emissions tests anymore. The only advantage to having a small car is literally the savings on gasoline. And probably insurance. Other than that, we're free to drive what we want, and the gov't …

Re: Master of Orion2

I'm pretty sure MOO2 had both a DOS (protected mode) executable and a Windows executable. Have you tried the DOS one?

Interestingly there is EGA version of F-117 Stealth Fighter 2.0 This is certainly the first time I hear about this! You mean like it was sold separately? How odd. Not that odd, actually. At least within the adventure game genre, it was quite common for game publishers to release separate 16-color …

On PCs without sound cards, F-19 did try to squeeze the best out of the PC speaker it could. It would simulate polyphony on it in the intro. It was quite speed-sensitive though, as you can hear here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_f8v2Xd6wg (the three concluding notes in the end appear to be …

Re: Newly made PCMCIA sound card

PCMCIA lacks ISA DMA mechanism, this makes it difficult to achieve compatibility with SB, WSS and others which use DMA to play back the sound streams. Some sort of software solution is necessary that simulates DMA controller and passes data to the card. Bus mastering is also unavailable so the card …

Re: Bruninho's Virtual Machines (Windows, Linux, Mac)

in PC Emulation
AH yes, QEMU should indeed alsof support the VMWare SVGA2 driver. But I haven't been able to find the Windows 9x VMWare driver. It only shipped with VMWare up to a certain version. If somebody could point me in the right direction w.r.t. where to download the installer, I'd appreciatie it. 😀
