Re: Do ATI/AMD cards have an Extension Limit control ?

in Windows
Sorry, can you clarify? I'm on Nvidia, and had to enable the limit for a number of games to get them to run. I think, as you said, they were all GL Quake I and II engine based games, like GLQuake, Hexen II, GLQuake II, etc. You're saying ATI doesn't have this control, but then it doesn't need it cuz …

Re: General MT-32 emulation thread?

Because the information is so disorganized in this subforum! That's the whole f'ing point here. There's nothing about MT-32 emulation or how to do it on the DosBox wiki, or any of the DosBox guides in the guide subforum, or any of the websites that detail all the sound device choices for DosBox. …

Re: Everything to do with scaling

That's a good question. Also, any operations performed by the scaler setting are done BEFORE the full and windowresolution settings, right? And both of those are performed before any additional scaling you have set in your GPU drivers (set to fullscreen, for example).

Re: General MT-32 emulation thread?

1 so how do you know which games were composed for which sound device? 2 is there not just an add on or patch of some kind I can use with regular DosBox? And yes I know how to emulate GUS. I thought I implied that by saying it was easy.

General MT-32 emulation thread?

There isn't one, so I have question I'd imagine many would have. 1. What games (maybe a list) sound best using MT-32 sound? (is it always superior to GM and GUS?) 2. Since DosBox doesn't emulate the MT-32, how would I go about doing so? I see words like MUNT thrown around, with no clear simple …

Everything to do with scaling

...Though I think I figured out most of it by now. A question: When the full and windowresolution settings are used, those scaling operations are hardware based, and performed by the GPU and it's drivers and whatever algorithms it uses, correct? This can be contrasted to the scaler setting, which is …

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
you did, and I understand the hardware is different, but in terms of using one or the other choice for a game on dosbox, is it possible for there to be a difference in practice? dosbox doesn't emulate a Waveblaster, so what's it doing when I tell a game to use one? aren't both just using (in the …

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
waveblaster sound identical to GM on magic carpet. not sure what other games I have handy that support it. I suspect it'll always sound like GM using dosbox? for LBA i meant like... it's simply labelled wrong or something? Like it says MT-32, but the game just straight up is coded to do GM?

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
or is it possible the game is not even attempting to do MT-32 and is simply doing GM? is that what that wiki list is suggesting in that it doesnt have MT-32 compatibility. I'm going to try a couple games with waveblaster and see if they also sound just like GM or not thanks guys, I'm learning so …

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
ah, thanks so much! so my choice for music for this game is either GUS (2 different synth sets in the commonly distributed package) Roland MT-32 (which may very well end up sounding not right cuz of mismatches with GM synth) Waveblaster (same issue as above) some FM synth whew! exhausting. Or, I …

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
ok I'm just learning all this stuff. can you explain the behaviour with those other 2 choice I described? why I hear music on "waveblaster + sb16 (midi)" and yet nothing on "AWE32" ? what is dosbox behaviour regarding those?

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
is dosbox doing the same thing when I pick "waveblaster + sb16" as it does to MT-32 (using my default GM synth)? why doesn't it do it for AWE32? and if I can't control music when its GM in LBA (you're right in that it does work for FM synth), because of dosbox doesn't do that, why does the music …

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
I have it set to the default windows GM synth set .... which is based on the roland sound canvas, right? also check my 2 edits above also you are a major help! also, does that mean I could effectively choose "roland mt 32" for any game and get the same music as choosing "general midi" ?

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
Okay I'm a little confused. I chose Roland MT32 for the music and I'm getting music......... I thought dosbox didn't actually emulated one of these cards and I had to have the hardware itself edit: same goes for "Waveblaster on SB16" edit 2: yet it doesn't like AWE32 choice... dosbox doesn't emulate …

Re: Relentless / LBA - no general midi support?

in DOS
would the Wave Blaster be better than GUSPPL161? also I'm going to try a no-cd patch and determine where the cd music normally is. I've already seen several places where synth music is (vs no music). Also, I saw this on another thread, but the in-game settings for music volume (both "music" and "cd" …
