Isn't it true that the OPL chip uses a quarter sine wave stored in ROM to generate the 4 basic oscillator modes? So, "technically", an OPL2 chip is a "wavetable" synthesizer 😊

I can also add from experience that the CF170 has the fixed disk bit set, and operates as a normal IDE disk. For me, the 16GB CF170 card has worked for over a year in my MS-DOS retro PC, but that is of course no long term guarantee. 😉

As far as music goes, it doesn't even need to be realtime, you can generate any amount of data ahead of time since you always know what music data is needing to be written in the chip and can render ahead a stream that you then play back. Got rid of a 17” and 19” Iiyama trinitron CRT because I had moved to TFTs and they were too large and heavy to keep around at the time (I was a student at the time). Surely regret it now, my current CRT isn’t nearly as good as they were.

He is using DEVLOAD which allows you to load devices drivers in a batch file. He also said iirc that the drive does appear in DOS which it wouldn’t without a driver.

I know that some SB Pro routines don’t like fast CPU’s, even on a SB16. Sometimes you need to disable the L1 cache to get it to work. Also some OPL3 software doesn’t like fast CPU’s.

I have a MS-6167 mainboard for the Slot-A Athlon that also allows you to set a full screen splash screen during POST that I changed back in the day, I think with CBROM, I don’t remember.

All modes with 400 lines or 200 scandoubled lines ran at 70 Hz, that includes 80x25 textmode. It flickers noticeably less on a real CRT than 640x480 or 320x240 modes.

Tildo is right. That Inertia Player doesn't offer the option to choose 8 or 16 bit mixing doesn't mean that it matters in terms of quality. It's just plain math. As just a side note: in my experience most 486 era games (like Jazz Jackrabbit) will run just fine on a 600 MHz system in pure DOS, if you go further back in time you could clock your cpu down or use slowdown utilities, like setmul.

The AWE64 is perfectly usable with less then a Pentium 90, it just works like an AWE32 (because the additional channels are software generated). But sound quality wise you are better off with a SB16 and a Dreamblaster or other wavetable added to the waveblaster header.

The question of the TS still isn’t clear to me. To me it seems the TS just wants to check out what different sound cards on their own make of the midi commands sent to them. I guess when he says “sample” he actually means “General MIDI instrument”.

Some play routines don’t start playing a channel if the first note has a porta-to-note command. Maybe because it wants to know the original pitch that it should adjust. Scream Tracker just plays that note as if the desired pitch is already reached (if that makes sense).

Quick addendum: Using a 4xAA box didn't work either, and when I measured the voltage across 4 lithium cells, it was 6.9V! With 3, I got 5.2V, seems more than enough.
