keyboard won't work at all when Dosbox is running

I've just installed Dosbox 0.74 onto a 32 bit windows 7 system running on a year old HP pavilion DV5 notebook. When I launch Dosbox, there is no response to keyboard input - I could type away all day without a single keystroke coming up at the command prompt. Any other known problems with keyboards …
