I can't go back to serial mice either. I would say that my PS/2 mouse feels a little like a serial mouse in Win95, but not as bad. If your 386 has an AWARD BIOS, even a version 4.20, you can modify the motherboard to use a PS/2 mouse. I have a AWARD-based 386 board I plan on doing this with.

Quake is made for pentiums, not for 486s. I used to think that way until I tried a Voodoo3 with GLQuake. Using an AMD X5-160 and a Voodoo3, I could get 27.5 FPS in GLQuake at 640x480 with 16-bit colour. Enabling sound reduces the framerate to 24.5 fps, which is very playable. A Cyrix 5x86-133/4x …

Interesting. I guess the "cache detection routine" in the Biostar MB-8433UUD doesn't care that 1024K is not natively supported on that board because my adaption worked without any BIOS trickery.

After reading that article, the thought came to me that perhaps Microsoft could offer an operating system for sale called Windows XP OSR2. It is essentially the same as Windows XP SP3, except that you the consumer have to purchase OSR2 to continue receiving security updates.

I added my Cyrix 5x86-133/4x system to the database using Phil's VGA batch file. PCPBench = 23.6 3Dbench = 83.9 Quake = 15.8 Doom = 49.3 (1515) SUM = 88.7 For a non-overclocked system, it is neck-and-neck with Vetz's POD83. I also added an IBM 5x86-100.

OK, it seems Vetz was correct. Phil's bench removes the bar at the bottom of the screen which shows how much life you have left, bullets, etc., whereas the default setting is to leave that status bar in place. I do not understand why smeezekitty's results are unaffected by the two benchmark …

smeezekitty, thank you for checking this. I wonder what is going on with my performance issues when using Phil's Quake. The problem only manifests itself with Quake, and not any of the other benchmarks. EDIT: What motherboard, chipset, CPU, and graphics card are you using?

vetz, could you provide a photographic example of the visual difference between fullscreen with and without UI? From running the two case scenerios, I did not notice any difference, but perhaps I do not know what to look for.

The opposite effect - very strange indeed. Are you running the benchmarks from within DOS or within Windows' DOS prompt? Is it possible that you have sound enabled? Try removing the sound card or disabling sound in Quake (there is some command for this, but I don't recall right now).
