Re: Portable forensics computer anyone

in Milliways
Did anyone look close enough at the pics to tell the system uses a standard ATX motherboard? I'd love to own the machine just because of that. I like the idea of a computer that's semi portable (I wouldn't bring it to starbucks but it could be nice sitting at a hotel desk or at a friend's place) …

Re: Socket A questions

I bought a Thermaltake Silent boost cooler sometime in 2004 and it's been used in a number of Socket A systems that have passed by me. In many cases, it's annoying to install because it's kinda big. However, after all these years, and all the dust that's covered it, the thing remains quiet with it's …

Re: Newest Old System, an Athlon XP box

The reason consoles dominate is because they provide a dedicated platform with minimal overhead specially optimized for games whereas computers have to do a number of tasks. High end computers and even many mid range will always provide better graphics than contemporary consoles. However, between …

With wages and the job market stagnant as cost of living and inflation go up, things aren't good. Whenever money becomes harder to make AND at the same time, the value of each individual dollar drops, many people lose motivation and decide to settle for whatever they can have. I don't believe we're …

Re: Newest Old System, an Athlon XP box

IMO, it the Athlon XP itself is a great chip but it feels like the majority of motherboards and many chipsets that support it are pieces of crap. Also, for daily use, while the Athlon XP might have had an edge back in it's day, it feels like NetBurst aged a little more gracefully. I do remember back …

Re: 98 drivers

What model system and what are the specifications? Dell systems usually have a service tag number somewhere on the case as well. All of that info will help you. Try their support site; their driver archive covers systems as old as the early 1990s.

Newest Old System, an Athlon XP box

Years back, I built for my mother a desktop with an Athlon XP 2000+, 1gb DDR333, 20gb Quantum Fireball hard drive, GeForce MX420 and a generic DVD burner. Sometime last year it quit booting into Windows consistently, would only cold boot (if you hit reset button or tried restarting from Windows or …

I haven't been happy with blank CDs since the early 2000s. I only use them temporarily when I work on a computer without USB ports and/or network access and that's been a long time. Even OS installs I do over network nowadays.

I'm speaking as a citizen of the United States who has never been overseas so some of what I say may be irrelevant to you, the reader. Even in the glory days of this country, we had troubles and we were pissing off other countries around the world. As such, we've brought it upon ourselves to have …

Re: What to do with my dual PIII?

With Windows NT, I guess you could play some old OpenGL games. I think your idea to tinker with other operating systems is good. BeOS is something I haven't used since 2001 but I remember being pretty fond of it and having some fun with it. The computer should also do well with Windows 2000. If …
