The phantom drive is gone. 😀 Now, there's a third issue: I didn't see the sound card installed. 🙁 I need to contact the person who gave me the computer for the model of the sound card.

wbahnassi: if you have MS-DOS 6.xx, try pressing F8 before the OS loads and selecting step-by-step confirmation. That way, you can skip the drivers you want to disable. This way, you can skip the whole editing of the config files.

IIRC, DOS 6.2 fixed a bug with writing back incomplete data upon program exit but not if the program locks up. I can use SMARTDRV on a Win98SE tower in DOS mode but am wondering if there's a better choice.

I recommend using QEMM if possible. It has some compatibility issues but consistently gives more UMB. Also, if you're not using QEMM, you might want to tweak your memory configuration manually. If you have DOS's MEMMAKER, it can optimize your memory for you. Just remove all the DEVICEHIGHs and LHs …

Just press F8 before the splash screen and choose the right option. IIRC, DOS 6.x also had it. I think DOS 6.0 could only do this in config.sys but 6.2 can do it also …

I think I explained it wrong this time: 2M is the real-mode driver, and I want Windows to use it instead of its native floppy driver upon startup. What setting can I give in the ios.ini file to stop Windows from replacing the floppy driver with its own?

I think you misunderstand again: I want to use a real-mode driver for the floppy drive so I can get 2M to work, as 2M is a real-mode driver that greatly increases the capacity of a floppy.

IIRC, 2M's docs say that the program won't work with Win98SE but gave a way to get it to work with Win95 by disabling the 32-bit driver for the floppy drive. It doesn't give the method for Win98SE. Also, IIRC, the last time I tried your approach, Windows tried to reinstall the 32-bit driver.
