Next problem will be SSE. Windows XP needs Pentium CMPXCHG8B instruction. So absolutely no 486. Windows 7 needs SSE so absolutely nothing before Pentium 3. Little bit cheating, and it will run without SSE, but still need a P6 microarchitecture, so at least Pentium PRO or Pentium 2.

CL-GD5420 series minimum. But better search CL-GD5430 series. CL-GD5440 series is overkill for 486. I have 5429 ISA and 5436 PCI and 5446 PCI both are excellent cards. And few machines with integrated controllers.

Back in the day I remember that Cirrus cards and drivers are the best and most compatible for Windows 3.1x and Video for Windows and Quicktime.
