I really fight the urge to necropost this CGA game thread. Well it is time to modify additional motherboard scavenged 32pin Flash EEPROMs to 28pin to use them with my LAN cards. And start to experiment.

And XTIDE universal IDE BIOS for using large drives in old computers. And you can even put a minimalist DOS in rom, but there are many limitations in the open source implementation. I have not get into commercial ROM-DOS.

S3 Savage should have a very compatible and fast 2D performance, and even decent 3D performance especially for those S3TC games. So the problem lies elswhere. Maybe driver or Direct X problems.

Pentium 60 and 66 are all socket 4. First socket 5 cpus were 75 and 90. PS. Never seen any info on a Pentium 50, if it existed, then only some internal Socket 4 engineering sample that nobody has in the wild.

As far as chipsets go, until a few months ago I would have responded with ESS ES1868, but today my answer is simple: CMI8830/A . I am a believer. That said, if we are talking about specific cards Orpheus is in a league of its own.. Ok, what is clearly more compatible or better with that CMI8330?

who the hell really needs WSS compatibility? Genuine OPL3 is little overrated. Nothing old and plenty has hardware intelligent MPU-401. SOFTMPU works just fine for those few old titles. Jazz Jackrabbit and Commander Keen seem to trip people up fairly frequently, but they worked well enough back in the day. I have never had problems with Jazz Jackrabbit and Commander Keen. But well I only use Cirrus, S3 or Nvidia cards in my systems. In my experience Cutemouse is a nice "cute" little program, but if you want best compatibility use Microsoft Mouse driver Version 8.20. It really works with everything. Jut try to load it in UMB if possible, because yes, it is a memory hog, a compatible memory hog. Oh... my two sents. Z aka. Zed …

Usually yes, red is always +5 and blue/black are gnd. And if you have green and yellow, those are clock and data. But some "made in china" power cables have even Ground Neutral and Line power colors messed up, so I do not trust nothing.

There were many standards and half standards, better to locate ground and +5 first from motherboard and check that first, because wrong placement of +5 or wrong polarity may fry your mouse, or motherboard.

Most compatible is Microsoft Mouse driver Version 8.20. Older ones are not compatible with Windows 3.1x and newer. And that 9.01 version does not bring anything new to the table, only more memory hog.
