Re: PSU - bust the myth

https://1-t.imgbox.com/NDGj6Jv6.jpg ^ My guess from a distance is that the caps circled in red are probably related to +5VSB circuit, at least two of them. I'd replace with lowish ESR, same uF, and 50V rated (regardless of the originals being 25V or 35V) from some quality long-life series, like …

Re: PSU - bust the myth

... I just have to wonder why did this IC go up in flames? ... If I had to bet: " Control Voltage Supply CONTROL pin voltage VC is the supply or bias voltage for the controller and driver circuitry. An external bypass capacitor closely connected between the CONTROL and SOURCE pins is required to …

Re: PSU - bust the myth

For the scientific interest here's a review of a top-building-quality PSU made in Japan by Murata: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cooler-master-masterwatt-maker-1200-mij-psu,4963-3.html It has three fuses. Will probably be the only PSU still working after a martian attack with tripods.

Re: PSU - bust the myth

So I finally got around to opening that FSP PSU ... Nice pics. Save for the oozing/bulging Teapos, it looks fairly decent. A couple extra Y-caps on input filtering wouldn't harm, however there are two MOVs (between the bulk caps) and one '472' Y-cap across rectified primary ground and earth (good …

... The reason they may have used a slightly smaller heatsink ... Is to cheap out on aluminium. To compensate they have to up the fan revs, hence: ... They are not quiet though. Don't believe the Noise Killer lie ... The TX750 was solidly built (Chemicons, ball bearing fan, etc). I'd rather trust a …

... I didn't see the need to replace the 2.4 LD9 which was just re-worked in 2000 to correct the originals design flaws ... Guess they had to keep pace with emissions regulations, you know. The L61/Z22SE also has some flaws, timing chain lubrication may fail if you don't change oil regularly, OEM …

... And now, here are its innards, for your evaluation of how likely it is to set my house on fire :) That PoS sux so much that I'll leave aside the comp killing aspects and concentrate on the home razing features: https://8-t.imgbox.com/TkJh4Bl5.jpg . . https://6-t.imgbox.com/2IrDgOCM.jpg ... I …

^ Yep you got it, known as L61 in USA, Z22SE this side of the pond. From your kind epithets I deduct you've had nice experiences with it? 🤣

Re: PSU - bust the myth

Would $10 300W PSUs with 120MM bottom fans be terrible ideas to use with 100W P1/P2 systems? ... Definitely yes, beware of any $10 PSU, guaranteed gutless-wonder fire-hazard. They may appear to work OK at the beggining but in the mid/long term they're a risk for your system and home. Don't Be …

Re: PSU - bust the myth

... Let me present the COLORSit Model 340U-SCE... 420W PSU  Not too bad but you really want to recap at least the secondary caps and the smaller caps between heatsinks to reasonably trust that thing. EDIT - Also replacing the-infamous-four-diode-treatment with a rectifier bridge wouldn't harm. …

Friendly advice: I'd obscure vehicle plates before posting images on the net. Here's a pic of my current daily driver while undergoing some 'overclocking' with hat off  : https://6-t.imgbox.com/CRpDRDHT.jpg I dare you to guess brand and model. (Haynes hint: engine was made in the USA …

Re: PSU - bust the myth

Simply because of the constant load, yes? Mostly. Constant load (whenever PSU is switched on) and no fan (whenever PC is turned off) , so +5VSB caps have to rely on whatever passive cooling is available inside the PSU for most of their lifetime (unless comp runs 24/7). A larger can also means lower …

Re: PSU - bust the myth

PWM chip is safer than 2-transistor, but FUBAR crappy caps will ruin the day anyways. The Antec SL300 in this post mortem had a UC3844B PWM controller on +5VSB, and yet: "... With only the old 680µF Fuhjyyu caps, the 5VSB output settles around 5V, is horribly noisy and shows horrible power-up …

Re: PSU - bust the myth

From this pic of a 400PN R there are probably two small MOVs (yellow thing drapped in black heatshrink) between the bulk caps: https://i.imgbox.com/qQiL8H8o.jpg http://tokes.ru/bloki-pitaniya/38-remont-fsp-atx-400pnr ^ One DM311 PWM controller for +5VSB can also be seen, so no 2-transistor sweat.

Re: PSU - bust the myth

Any thoughts on this Pentium 4 era PSU? ... http://i.imgur.com/QsTEE6yl.jpg Found some pics of its guts here . http://ru.gecid.com/data/power/200901260000-1189/img/05.jpg Old style half-bridge with BJTs, passive PFC and group regulation. All or most caps are Teapo (could be much worse). Looks …

I post the video @ 22:59. The video is 19 minutes long (and quite interesting). Yet by 23:09 Scali already "knows" that it's "a bunch of nonsense". 🤣
