Yes, the archive is pretty awesome. They could really use an index of every game reviewed with issue numbers, though. I'm always searching through PDF's looking for reviews on specific old games.

You'd be talking about GTX 500 and HD6000 series video cards for gaming. Advancements don't come as fast as they used to, that's for sure; you should probably add 5 years before each category is reached with recent hardware.

"Retro PC" is a purpose, not an age group. Basically, to me, 5 years makes for a crappy old PC that's limited in everyday use, after 10-15 years they're classics, and after 20-25 years they become vintage.

I don't think I will be interested in a Win7 PC, but there's definitely future potential there. Win10 will have changed things a lot ten years from now. 'Always online', cloud based infrastructures and service based licensing will work against preservation.

V2 has nearly complete compatibility with the oldest Glide titles, and for those that work with it it's the preferable solution performance & image quality wise. Investing into S-Video capturing seems like a bad bet long term, the quality just doesn't compare. There should be used VGA capturing gear out there.

Well, the Voodoo 5 6000 is objectively the ultimate thing, a couple hundred of them out there. The Quantum3D SLI-on-a-card V1's & V2's are pretty special things. No real idea about the relative rarities of the more common lines.

Hmm, that's something to keep in mind. The flexing can really be unnerving, and the crappy plastic mobo standoffs in many old cases don't help the matter. I'm pretty sure the reseating of VLB cards broke some solder joints on one of my motherboards.

I don't think you can really go wrong there. Either Sound Blaster makes sense. 44KHz mixing rate is asking a lot of that CPU with the SB16. The GUS is perfect in that it can offload stuff from the CPU and run better, but some GUS games could probably also benefit from a DX4-100 or a Pentium.

The GM standard was kind of vague in concept. The Sound Canvas was the pioneering GM device and other hardware that followed was actually designed to "emulate" it rather than the standard. Games used and I know at least Yamaha supported extended GS features.

I suppose VLB is considered faster because of the specification. PCI above 33MHz is out of spec, while VLB goes up to 40 or 50 MHz.

Those things do run hot. Basically a twice overclocked 9700 Pro. Came out around the same time as the 5800 Ultra. People actually thought those cooling solutions were okay. 😀

I don't know what release Bethesda has made available on Steam, but the level actually requires ZDoom to run. Romero has never been employed by Bethesda as far as I know.
