Re: Wipeout 2097 (XL) with Windows 98

in Windows
leileilol wrote: I'll be an oddball and suggest a PowerVR PCX2 to act as a GPU bottleneck. It usually does 21fps at best in 1024x768 and it can run Wipeout 2 at that resolution. That cracked me up and it's creative... Love to see the ingenuity of retro computer users 🤣

Re: Dos games and 16mb of ram

in DOS
^ It's possible, but terribly short-sighted... for example, Windows 95/98/ME refuse to boot with anything else than Himem.sys for compatibility reasons. If you rename XMGR.SYS to Himem.sys Windows 98 will load happily. If you have 512MB+ you can use XMGR.SYS /T0 to flail Windows into submission (/T0 …

Re: Dos games and 16mb of ram

in DOS
What can a 386/486 with more than 16 mb RAM profit from this? I mean, most freedos components require a Pentium (uide for one). Does the rest work flawlessly on a 386/486 with DOS7 ? Also, as far as I can remember, XMGR is not a 100% substitute for Microsoft himem.sys. Sadly I scarcely document the …

There's this also: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/files/getxms.zip working wonders teamed with this: http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/simtelnet/msdos/bootutil/wrap10.zip The main idea is to reserve a block of XMS after the XMS manager loads, load everything you need (cache/RAMdisk/whatever), and free the first …

Re: B0rked DB50?

Just a wild guess: Could the DB have touched something on the AWE? Those boards came with plastic spacers after all... That could be possible of course, although I was careful enough to put some rubber spacers that came from a 12cm fan. I guess I'll never know why or how, I just have to assume it's …

Re: B0rked DB50?

Thanks for the tip, that's another option. I already got an Audician 32 Plus, so I might get a Canvas... Of course I'm using native SoundFont wherever I can, it sounds quite good. It's just that for every game I got that supports SoundFonts, there are 10 for General MIDI... I'm talking about a …

Re: B0rked DB50?

Sorry for your loss man, that's some expensive hardware :'( I'm starting to think those gadgets are made of suck. They make for expensive thermal paste spreaders (they're way too light for paperweights). So back to tomorrow, starting all over. Little quiz for you people: Let's say I got a …

Re: B0rked DB50?

Thanks for your help :) I select General MIDI/MPU-401, port 330, IRQ 5 (same as SB, for the few games asking for it). Games I tried so far are Colonization, Doom, EF2000 v2.0 and MechWarrior 2 (vanilla edition). System is on PC DOS 7.1 in real mode (except of course for Colonization). Sound Blaster …

B0rked DB50?

Good day folks, me again with yet another problem I hope you can help me with. Today I wanted to try out a DB50XG on an AWE32 (CT3990) with a couple of games in DOS. I installed the usual software for the AWE, CTCM, DIAGNOSE etc. Everything is fine with it, FM and digitized sound work in everything …

Re: ATX 2.x to ATX 1.1 mod?

Yes, you are right, I noticed this today. That's another thing learnt, -5V is used for ISA (and not even all ISA cards use that but a couple of them, seemingly pretty rare). At least everything is working (so far), so I'm a happy panda. But on the other hand, I don't know why it didn't work 24 hours …

Re: ATX 2.x to ATX 1.1 mod?

Thanks for your input. Chronology so far: - Old Tagan PSU on Asus P3C mobo: unstable, would work most of the time, usually stalled on first attempt to turn machine on, would work on second attempt. Once I noticed all voltages in hardware monitor in BIOS go from nominal values to 0.0 marked in red... …

Re: (Hell)o

Hola, muy buenas xD I'm glad you don't have any problems with that combo. I ordered mine with an empty socket, so I guess I won't have any problems either. After 20 years using Creative hardware I still don't know what's the use for that CSP anyway, so it's not like I'm going to miss it ^^ Maybe …
