Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

Well... to get back on topic... After seeing this story of leakages, I started up the system monitor to see what this one did. I could see the swapfile grow, but after waiting about 1-2 minutes it would be released. Same with memory usage. So, if there's supposed to be a leakage issue, I couldn't …

Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

... Translated that means "go pack your things and leave"? Just kidding. 🙂 Ok, ok, I understand. I'm quiet now and won't talk about this anymore. I was talking in defense, anyway, explaining my reasoning. "Derailed".. Um-yes.. 🙄 That makes it sound as if we had started talking about something …

Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

The OP was mostly concerned about the memory usage and leaks in Windows 95. 64-128 megabytes is plenty enough memory, and with proper adjustments to the cache and other memory management related settings the OS runs really well. Cacheman is really just a GUI front-end to adjusting parameters and …

Re: Windows 95 - memory leaks? Memory issues

Just so you know, installing Internet Explorer and the shell update cause a whole host of these memory leak issues on Windows 95. At least I seem to recall Nathan Lineback had documented some issues down to various DLLs that were broken in those updates. You can see his website for more info ( …

Re: General doubt on PC games that use CD audio

the issue isn't that audio pauses upon track changes, where obviously there will always be a seek time with optical media, it's that PC games grind to a halt for a second or two. a CD drive playing audio should not affect the game at all. this really seems like a legacy PC cruft issue that reminds …

Re: Half-Life - CD music stuttering

The setting I've mentioned above is actually for the CD drive cache, based on its speed. I've seen on another Vogons thread that there's the utility Nero DriveSpeed which can be used to throttle the CD drive speed. I was not able to find a valid link for the installer: does anyone know where it can …

Re: Half-Life - CD music stuttering

no, on the contrary i would rather try a slowdown utility that will run the drive at a constant speed. 40x is no good for playing games off CD because of the constant spinning up/down adding delay, those fast speeds are really only good for things like installs. 8x and slower is optimal for games …

Re: Half-Life - CD music stuttering

If your system isn't at the absolute lowest end for system requirements and can handle MP3 playback during gameplay, you should patch the game at least to version 1.1.1.0 and then rip the CD-tracks. Place ripped tracks into X:\dir\Half-Life\valve\media and name the files like so: Half-Life01.mp3 …

Re: Voodoo 3 problem with 3D Mark 2000

Sorry for the necro but I'm having exactly the same problem... again. So, today I successfully ran benchmarks on two Creative Voodoo Banshee 16MB PCI cards in 3DMark2000. I tried to benchmark a Voodoo3 3000 AGP and it froze during the medieval town scene as previously described. Now this is a …

Re: Best brand of GeForce 2 cards to look for?

I am looking into building a Socket 370 machine and was led to the GF2 MX400. I would love a Voodoo 3 but they're way too overpriced. Anyone know what brand of card to look for? I've heard about poor 2D output on some cheaper cards. Also a miscellaneous question, anyone know if the GF2 is capable …

Re: GTA San Andreas on Win9x, is it possible?

in Milliways
sometimes games can be 'tricked' into working on earlier versions of windows, that's fun maybe but the game is also likely to be less stable i'm ok with using the OS as listed in 'requirements' on the basis that it should at least work :) sometimes games can be 'tricked' into working on earlier …

Re: GTA San Andreas on Win9x, is it possible?

Hello everyone, I have GTA III and Vice City installed on my PIII-S 1.4Ghz Tualatin build that I have for games between roughly 1998 to 2003/4. I'd like to install San Andreas on it to complete that era's GTA games, but I couldn't even launch the installer for it on WinME. The minimum requirements …
