SB16 and sound volume levels in certain DOS games

Hello, merry xmass and best wishes for whole community :) Im playing around with my old Dos 6.22 rig with SB16 (CT1750) non pnp card, everything works fine (yeah the hanging note bug is there) but for some odd reason certain games make my ears bleed as soon as i run them on. For example, i've got my …

My ultimate PIII build

Hello everyone, First of all i'd like to thank YOU for this amazing community that helped me solve many problems over the years, probably without information i found on vogons i wouldn't be able to enjoy my retro PC builds as much as i can now. I'd like to present some information on my main retro …

Re: Late dos games and PCI sound cards

While it generally works i find the music emulation a bit quirky, SB16 portion usually runs great. General Midi has some music slowdowns here and there, plus some volume ups and downs (like some notes play louder for a moment). OPL3 emulation is mediocre, some games wont even run with this properly, …

Re: SB Live slowdowns in Wolfenstein 3D

The specs are: Pentium III 650mhz ASUS P2B motherboard 384 MB ram Voodoo 5 5500 AGP SB Live Value ct4830 3Com 10/100 Ethernet card I installed the drivers from sb live installation disc found on vogonsdrivers.com. Device manager shows 4.12.01.0905 - it's VXD driver, and i don't see any IRQ …

SB Live slowdowns in Wolfenstein 3D

Hello everyone :) I decided to give a try Soundblaster Live (ct4830) in my Windows 98 computer and the card is quite good for Windows games, however i ran into some strange problems in DOS games already :) I know the SB16 emulation isn't perfect, the FM quality is averagish and so on, but the thing …

Re: Best and worst sound cards you have ever owned?

I never had a really bad sound card in my pc, but to mention the worst of what i had: integrated Soundmax on Asus M2N motherboard. It had problems with several games, like for example Oblivion was stuttering pretty bad in given moments, when alot of sound samples were played at a time. As of the …

Re: Problem with ESS Solo-1 DOS Emulation

I had ESS Solo-1 card with no wavetable header in my DOS machine before and there was no issues with games like Doom 2, Hexen, Duke 3D. Just make sure the High DMA is different than 8 bit DMA, i always leave it set to 5 and sound just works. IIRC the driver i was using was not ESSSOLO.SYS but …

Re: good SB16 replacement?

there is whole set of jumpers on this board, however i don't have any manual for it. So using trial and error method i noticed there are jumpers for setting base address of the card (which can't be manipulated using ESSCFG) and what would be amplifier i guess, howeber it doesn't completely cure the …

Re: good SB16 replacement?

The ESS 1688F i used was PnP so it only needed ESSCFG to initialize, there were no drivers for it. MPU-401 worked well with this card, however it was really very noisy, plus in some older games Soundblaster driver wasnt working at all. After a day of playing with the Yamaha card im really impressed, …

Re: good SB16 replacement?

Did you also take Aztech sound cards into account for your decision? I picked only those cards available locally with affordable price (around $10). At the time i last checked there were no Aztech cards. But i must report update on this topic, swapped the ESS 1688F for some OEM Yamaha YMF719E card, …
