Re: No cd audio in Dos

I thought that Win9x also needed this cable, so you would not get CD audio there without it? Do you have the MIXERSET program (installed as part of the Sound Blaster DOS software)? Try checking if CD Audio may be muted there.

Re: DOS Game Club

in September we've got Commander Keen lined up. What a rollercoaster :D Which one? All of them? The first trilogy is the original thing, but the second trilogy is much nicer in terms of presentation - complete with Adlib music and SB sound effects. I think it plays nicer too, but that may be …

Re: Warcraft2 mapping number keys to units/groups

in DOS
In W1, you can't just select a unit, click somewhere on the map and watch him go do the most appropriate action for that location (walk to, attack, harvest, repair, etc.). You have to explicitly mouse over to the command bar and choose the action, even if it's simply Move, then mouse back to the …

Yes I don't recall it being as extensive as that moonlight sequence in MK1. I do remember the game going into demo mode showing bits of the gameplay. If you call that short intro sequence with the lightning bolt and a few others before the gameplay footage then that's pretty barren. It was as long, …

The intro Music for MK1 is also legendary and those quick FMV intros of each character. In MK2 they decided to do away with those special FMV character intros and had no intro game theme. I think it was due to the memory space as they had no room or they would have included it I'm sure. Yes, the …

Interesting observations. :) I think MK1 holds this special place in your heart since it came first, and left a stronger impression. But ultimately I feel that MK2 was stronger in all aspects. When you take into account that MK1 was the first blockbuster game where something like this was seen, the …

But I felt the MK2 fatalities were tamer than MK1 which had more shock value. No way! MK2 fatalities on average were way more shocking. Baraka's impalement that you mentioned is probably the best example (and is way more gruesome than anything you find in MK1), but you also had: Kung Lao' slicing …

Re: Is Vista now Retro

clueless1 wrote: By the time the updates made it good, people moved on to 7, leaving only bad memories of Vista. Vista actually became good and stable a little before 7 became available, but this time Window (lol) was rather short (<1 year), that very few people caught up, and most just didn't …

I hear what you are talking about. I opened both signals in MATLAB and performed spectrogram analysis. SB output (DOSBox) spectrogram_sbp.png GUS output (DOSBox) spectrogram_gus.png You can see that the GUS signal has considerably more content in the upper frequencies (yellow versus greenish), …

You made me doubt myself, so I just tested it again; I let the game play, got to the bridge scene in the intro, paused with alt+p, and recorded a full play of the theme there with DOSBox using Ctrl+F6 (as I mentioned before, this version keeps looping music when you pause it. Really handy). I did …

So perhaps I actually misunderstand more than that, because it still does not make sense to me. The CD version does support GUS, it's true, but AFAIK it still plays exactly the same audio samples from the SFX folder. You say that it plays just the audio effects from the SFX folder, but takes the …

So, conclusion: Use Gravis Ultrasound. It's the best quality audio you can have for the GOG version I'm confused. Are you mixing up MK1 and MK2? When you say It turns out that all the .wav files in the sfx folder, besides the actual recorded samples, are simply the output of the Gravis Ultrasound …

Re: DOSBox or old computer for MS-DOS Games

in Milliways
I haven't encountered such games, but some may need specific settings. The only thing that may be more difficult with DOSBox is that it does not natively support AWE, but it's a minor thing since it support General MIDI, and if you have a good MIDI synthesizer driver, it will be just as good or …

Re: Good 4:3 LCD Monitor

Unfortunately 1280x960 is broken on this monitor. They decided to display it as a letterboxed 1280x1024, which itself is pillarboxed. The result has correct aspect ratio, but doesn't fill the whole screen, instead it has black frame on all sides (much smaller than when using 1:1 scaling but still …

learnt about it here after the site I used started charging. (cant even remember who that was now) Yeah, so far it seems nicest. Uploading is very easy as is organizing into folders, but it does scramble the names of images, and I found no way to change it till now. Wordpress.com allows keeping the …

Re: Photobucket now charges for third party inlining

Just got the email myself and surely all my links broke. They are doing it in waves, apparently. So, can anyone recommend a service that still allows hot-linking (preferably free, or for a one-time fee), and allows control of uploaded file names and their location in a hierarchy of folders? …
