I'd say go for the genuine Hakko as long as it's not a ridiculous in price. Also a used genuine Hakko should be fine. As we mentioned, they tend to last forever.

Barton 3200+ CPUs were drawing close to 30A on a 5V rail. Supplying the CPU rails with 12V VRMs is the only logical approach for dual CPU loads in this regime.

I've ran U7 on the above systems, and prefer them to Super Socket 7/ Socket 7 systems with simple L1/ L2 cache disabling and FSB switching. Ultima 7 re-enables L1 cache on these systems, but not on the ones I listed above. Very cheeky of Lord British to do that. Kind of a shame that EPIA boards …

I would argue that Quake remains relevant due to the wide availability of advanced engine remakes. Quake on DOS is pretty limited, though.

Socket 7 definitely does offer that sort of flexibility, not just by manipulating caches, but also by changing FSB and multiplier settings. It is an E-MU in both versions, with an EMU8000 in the Waveblaster II. Unlike the Goldfinch card or the GUS ACE, the Waveblaster and Waveblaster II are in no way programmable with new samples.

One big deal thing to check on ESR meters is that they use a 100kHz test signal. Might be square wave, saw tooth, sine wave - that doesn't matter too much but the frequency does. . The datasheets for low ESR caps give the ESR at 100kHz. If the test signal is not 100kHz you have to do math for each …

The better quality copper coolers are nickel anodized. With an application thickness as low as it is, I doubt conduction is much of a problem.

Well, I don't have an FDD in my current retro PC, so I plunk the HDD in a SATA dock and use Virtualbox instead. This way, I also don't have to worry about floppies being in good condition or not. The ability to use a SATA drive makes this very simple and straightforward.
