Well, thanks for reading anyway. I think I’ve figured it out. The main battery is unsurprisingly absolutely dead, and that was causing a malfunction. I have a second battery which can hold about ten seconds of charge and that fixes the problem.

FDISK /MBR did the trick! Thanks a ton! I haven't updated the BIOS but the old and failing hdd in it was 7GB so I don't think it'll be an issue.

Nobody replied, but for the record I figured out a workaround. I entered Safe Mode and moved the file that was causing the crash, so when it tried to launch it at next boot it returned a file no found error and dropped to a workable prompt.

Yeah, I suspected it would be kaput. That's fair enough. I want to get a cheap replacement, but is it feasible to replace the bezel so I can keep the snazzy looking one from the ZIP drive? Are cd drives all much the same or do I need a specific form factor to do this?
