From my experience the ESS Solo-1 is a great choice for VIA/AMD but not Intel chipset. In fact there is no perfect card, it all depends on your needs. But, without knowing your favorite games and to cover as many DOS games as possible, I would highly recommend a: Forté Media FM801-AU!

With chipsets Intel 865G and 875P, I was not able to get the SBPro emulation working in MS-DOS mode. However, as DOOM runs under Windows, everything should work fine. But regarding DOS compatibility, at least for this chipset, there are better PCI soundcards, I guess.
