Re: What speaker setup are you using on your vintage machine?

in Milliways
Headphone collectors are no different from collectors here and caused the prices of a lot of vintage planar headphones to skyrocket about 4 years ago (you can blame the "orhthodynamic" and "show us your vintage cans" threads on head-fi for that!), a k340 is almost the equivalent of a voodoo5, they …

Re: What speaker setup are you using on your vintage machine?

Difficult to know with decades old headphones, you need a considerable sample to up the confidence. I think potentially the 240 are overcategorized. People say there's three versions but acoustically a fair opposing guess is akg produced only two, first targeting free field and later diffuse field …

Re: VGA Capture Thread

The dos vga capture card market looks either quite saturated or very small. A bunch of visionrgb-pro1 on ebay have been up for $20 each shipped for a while without seeing sales. I've been periodically checking the seller's listing for almost a year actually and he doesn't get a lot of business for …

I have a very hard time believing the first part. What version did you have? You must of had the newer non bass heavy version. I had the much older late 70's version with the red/orange membranes. And yes the price on the k340 is insane, they don't sound all that good and yet nuts pay upwards to …

Re: What speaker setup are you using on your vintage machine?

I never really used speakers with my systems, but I do have a set of 70's AKG k240 sextet I use every now and then. IR ealy don't need sound on my systems as I'm more in to benching and overclocking then playing games and what not. I have a bunch of 70s, 80s and 90s headphones, including some …

Re: Ultima 7 cache off patch - U7DCP

Tried it on the k6 and saw it working. Messed around setting various cpu flags in dosbox and was satisfied enough that the patched game wasn't sensitive to them. Couldn't be bothered to test on the pentium since it's not set up for use, but it's a common enough platform that someone'll chime in if …

Re: Ultima 7 cache off patch - u7dcp

Nope, no evidence, as I have not looked at the code yet. This is just based on what bits the game seems to set to 0 based on your code replacement. By using EBX and only ANDing with 0xFE to clear only last byte you are effectively preserving top bits. I do want to make sure the patch doesn't screw …

Re: Ultima 7 cache off patch - u7dcp

Is there evidence that the game cares about bits in cr0 apart from the first one? The bit 0 thing could indeed be for the unreal mode thing. Of course, we don't care if the game cares about cache for speed reasons, just whether it cares about it for data correctness. Not sure about serpent isle, …

Re: Ultima 7 cache off patch - u7dcp

There's an experimental version that patches the game to have cache off only if it had already been turned off, e.g. with setmul. [experimental version removed and made the official version]. In other words, it prevents the game from touching the cache setting at all. If you test it, might as well …

U7DCP - Ultima VII DOS Cache Patch

U7DCP - Ultima VII DOS Cache Patch. Stops Ultima VII: The Black Gate aka. Ultima 7 from enabling CPU cache on launch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2tyyWk766s - the game running on a 1.4 GHz CPU no worries. Note that U7DCP comes as is, no guarantees, no warranty, and it may or may not work as …

Re: The ultimate Ultima 7 machine

in Milliways
I had a look into this. It doesn't seem intentional, the game just tries to enter and leave protected mode. .. For the second sequence it is not so easy since "xor eax, eax" is a short way to set eax to zero which uses only 3 bytes. To set eax to 40000000h as necessary to disable cache we would …
