K6-2+ and k6-3 dont care about “Cacheable RAM Size”, do they? Because if they do, MVP3 chipset prefers 128MB to 256MB (when the onboard L2 cache is 512Kb). If Blood II is the only game you are experiencing weird performance, then the above makes even less sense. You will get different opinions on …

If you aren't fussed about overclocking options, don't rule out Intel boards. They aren't always as feature rich with overclocking/memory timings but they are usually rock solid stable from my experience.

Whatever card you get in that class is going to be a strain on that MII. Might be worth your time at looking into a k6-2 chip, they are cheap and mostly period correct, weaker FPU than a MMX but at 400mhz or higher will run circles around either one of those chips. A K6-III or 2+/3+ would be even …

Strange. You should be seeing much better performance. Been a long time since I played Blood II, but I'm assuming you are running in D3d? How does the software mode compare? That should isolate you to just the CPU performance and might give you a clue if that is the culprit.

Your main concern with that build will be less performance than driver overhead. With that said there are still some good options that others have recommended. Just don't expect the moon as far as framerates go. A good Voodoo card is hard to beat in a Socket 7 rig for good reason.

Update: Today morning, removed the heatsink and the CPU and then analyzed the socket. Moved the latch a few times back and forth to view the underlying binding pads. The SIL chips are crap from my experience. They were crap when they were built onto motherboards and they were crap when they were on PCI cards. You should be able to source a replacement easily enough. I doubt that the socket was damaged, I think most of us have removed a CPU with the lever down before. P4's are about as common as herpes, you shouldn't have trouble locating one.

Cost saving for sure, pentium pro was out in '95 (some 1.5 years before the pentium II) and that had an off-die cache at full speed. They could've used a similar approach for the consumer-cpu...
