I mounted A VIA one in my 80486 and it works fine. (* VIAUSB20 - black PCB , 3xUSB ports back and one inside).

I have a Dell Precision 490 maxed out , I have no regrets. same os(win7 ultimate/enterprise ) on same SAS hdd 146gb 10krpm since 2011.... 0 issues . for win98se I use a Dell GX270 & Precision 670 . they all have support.

you can use anything that has driver , it won't make a difference on older games. I am still trying to fix my G80 GPU to add to my win98 Dell ( I have 2 dells GX270 w/ AGP & Precision 670 w/ pcie). They work fine w/ Win98sec

I just wanted to add that the hang-ing mentioned a few years back could be by misaligned (or bad) IDE cable , I had similar problem on my T3100e. (took a while to figure out)

L.E. My personal problem was the old WD 43AA was incompatible with t3100e controller , changed it to a Seagate and never looked back (sry). however it should still work with newer Caviar like WD1200 series

In an attempt to quieten the fans and give them 6V instead of the 12V from the PSU connector, I shorted out 2x 12V PSU fan connectors 😱(they're dead) so I'm now running 3x 12V fans in parallel from the single left-side fan connector. I know I'm not in the best part of the forum , but I have a head-ache trying to install win 3 or 3.1 on my T3100e.... no matter what memory manager I try i just don't seem to get the hang of it. Just to clarify , Yes you can run Fat32 on 80286 /286 under PC-DOS 7.01+ with fat32 support. ( I had the option to use /format drive in fat 32 under EZ Drive 8+ or Ontrack Disk Manager 9.57) - so its worth trying. I decided on 3x1,5 gb fat16 but you can go as much as program lets you.
