When the MB is cold, try heating the caps with a hair dryer and see if it boots up.

Try replacing the tiny smd cap near the clock generator. Bigger caps seem to be Rubycon and Sanyo and they age usually well if not thermal stressed.

DELTREE came with MSDOS 6.0. But it works fine in lower version, MS removed the annoying DOS version check. Another very useful command I moved from DOS 6 to my MS-DOS 5.0 PC is MOVE (pun intended!).

What would really help here would be a - milliohmeter - , since it's quite common to have multiple caps in the same power rail in most electronic devices. With such device would be very easy to tell tiny fractions of ohms and finding the capacitor with the lowest resistance. Must build one one of …

To clean the MBR just boot from a clean floppy and type FDISK /MBR, assuming you have just one HD. But reading that the problem occurred after installing the chipset drivers I suppose that a virus it's not the cause of the issue. You may try restoring an old registry configuration booting in DOS …

Most likely some power line shorted to ground. I would check for copper trace melted or broken. A clearer picture would help.

what's the model of the HD, I mean the string like "WD1200BB-22GUC0" on the label. Also a SMART log would be very useful to check the actual health of the drive.
