YMF71x cards need no TSRs to run. You can also use my SETYMF utility to init and control the cards, which is a massive improvement over Yamaha's own software.

The chip package can pretty much only be dissolved by fuming nitric acid, so normal etching supplies are pretty unlikely to produce any results.

in the first 1MB, top 384KB is the upper memory which is used up by system BIOS, video BIOS and video memory in most configulations. All option ROMs and whatever else goes there and most motherboards do not count that area in the memory count.

That particular one seems to have muxed digits so it isn't gonna work on the turbo displays that I know of.

The parity chip has data in and out as separate pins, while many motherboards connect them straight together on the SIMM connector allowing a normal chip to work, some might not and that makes in not possible to use normal chips for the parity. You can see that there is a spot for parity chip and it'll work if you solder in the chip, I just don't have the chips for it (they're not very easy to get, and in particular 60ns), nor I find it to be any sort of necessity so there's none on these sticks.

As far as identification goes, you could just use MIDI output functionality and issue a special sysex that the WB card will respond to. Less signals needed, perhaps bypassing need for any extra interface at all if SPDIF is sufficient (I don't actually like the format but many things have it...). …

8139 will have drivers for pretty much everything imaginable, including 95 : http://www.tmeeco.eu/9X4EVER/GOODIES/RTL81392/ Intel card will perform better though.

Intel Pro100S works nicely with 95, RTL8169 works too if you have the NDIS2 driver rather than the later NDIS4 one which will only work in 98/SE/ME.
