Re: Sound Blaster 16 Clones

After I'm done with my current project (that I will present soon) the next one involves something that will have SB16 compatibility among other things, but that's at least a year away due to other obligations.

Re: Resound OPL3 AdLib sound card just released

Two chips putting same data on the bus is less bad, there's far smaller fighting currents involved. It does work though, I have had a SB16 and YMF71x based card run side by side in past and it produced a nice chorus like effect due to real OPL3 on the SB16 and OPL3L in YMF71x having slightly …

Re: Subtle Waves on Old Tseng VGA Card

Here is my card. Where would I be looking to try this fix? *snip* One of the 3 larger chips next to the VGA port is RAMDAC, the photo is too blurry to make out any details on the markings. You'll want to identify the RAMDAC, then look up its datasheet and then you can see the pinout and identify …

Re: DOS issues with Yamaha Genius A151-A00 (OPL3-SAx)

ISA clock may be 8MHz, but there are a number of timings that have to be met, i.e when AEN goes low and when will read/write strobes go low, and when will data become available on the bus and when it disappears. Since the Yamaha chipset (and most others) are accessed completely asynchronously these …

Re: DOS issues with Yamaha Genius A151-A00 (OPL3-SAx)

This is the eBay listing with photos. As for the chipset, my chipset (KT33) was indeed made by VIA. E: locking out DMA0 by assigning it to "Legacy ISA" in the BIOS makes things work a bit better, though Doom will not play sound if General MIDI is enabled. The BIOS says my card has two DMA addresses …

Re: What CRT for RGB video?

Some 28" Philips with L04E chassis is going to be hard to beat, the tube is excellent and it is one of the last fully analog video path chassises they made, later ones use digital processing and are crappy in a number of ways. It also does wonders with composhit/s-video input but is sometimes not …

Re: DOS issues with Yamaha Genius A151-A00 (OPL3-SAx)

If you're using DMA0 then try changing it to DMA1 or 3, some newer boards such as what you use do not always play along with DMA0 on the YMF71x chips, I have to do that on my VIA based PIII-S machine and when I still had my P4 with Windbond ISA bridge. On the latter I never got YMF715 (OPL3SA3) and …

Re: DOS command line resolution

I wrote my own utility to set 80x50 mode... had I known about the MODE CON stuff I wouldn't have had to haha. It even sets the typematic rate, which my program also sets. But I suppose one advantage I have is that my program preserves display contents so I will see all the error messages and whatnot …
