The Compaq Deskpro SFF are really nice machines. I used them as a Linux fileserver and internet gateway at home for many years. First the Socket 7 edition without optical drive, later the slot 1 with CD.

The IBM XGA-2 must have been one of the early ones with heatsinks. Released about 1992 . For the fan, my first one was a Riva TNT, probably an ASUS V3400.

Check ps-2.kev009.com/ohlandl/SCSI/MCS.html The board looks very similar to the MCS-600 probably a OEM version for Quantum to support their tape drives. I would give the drivers a try.

The Prosignia 300/500 has a different planar, but the CPU complex is identical with the XL. I swapped them so often, I still dont know what board originated where. Did you try to unplug the HDD to see if it boots from FDD? One reason might be a defective FDD drive. I can not remember if there are switches on the motherboard to overwrite boot priority in the BIOS setup. The adaptec does not need dos drivers for the disk, but for the CD if it is SCSI.

Having multiple Deskpro /Ms and /XLs I can confirm these are perfect DOS machines. Both can be easily upgraded by swaping the CPU board to P66 for the M or PPro for the XL . The P90 board of the XL can be tweaked to P120, but never found a way to make it run @133 MHz. Some Prosignia used the same …
