Stay away from late nVidia drivers for Windows 9x, they aren't reliable. I suggest sticking with early Detonator drivers such 8.05 or 12.41 for the GeForce 256 on the SS7 computer.

The first Descent game doesn't have any official 3dfx patch but there is an unofficial one called D1_3dfx. Note that there isn't any mouse support, and it is in beta state. For Quake, just simply get GLQuake 0.97.

Configuring an SB16 sound card with the SBPro option won't give you stereo separation. If the issue is related to HDMA, then the OP's sound card may have the Vibra16XV chip which affects compatibility with some DOS games when selecting the SB16 option.

The MPU-401 hanging note bug depends on the AWE32 variant, those with the CT-1747 bus chip are quite useable. The emulation thru the EMU8K isn't affected by this. But yeah, nearly all clones are bug-free on that regard.
