Although it's loaded in via legacy, it still needs to go via the USB controller and I'd imagine invoking the USB drivers. USB was never a DOS era thing so there's bound to be hiccups. I'd agree with dr_st and go for a ps/2 mouse.

I usually just clean the heads with isopropyl alchohol and a q-tip. Then check the motor and gears. Make sure they are aligned properly and lube them up. Check and lube the eject mechanisms. I remember in Dixons when I was younger, playing one of the demo PCs in shop. I was playing a game that had a hatted-adventurer (like Indiana Jones, but not Indiana Jones) climbing ladders and wandering across platforms like a vertical maze. Anyone any idea what it could have been?
