Re: Voodoo 5 5500 Repair (project thread)

anthony wrote: 215c soldering temperature? Why? This is for unleaded soldering. 190 is more than enough for voodoos I prefer to follow standard process for reflow. Specification calls for 210-220 C peak temp for leaded. For unleaded it is 230-255C peak.

Voodoo 5 5500 Repair (project thread)

Hello again! This time around i have another V5 5500 on the healing bench. The card belongs to a member of this forum. Re: Another V5 5500 SMD capacitor identity question

And we have results. Most ceramic caps on graphics cards are just for power rail decoupling and their value or presence is not too critical. But this area of the card is different. Right at the other side of the card we can see PWM regulator ic LTC1929. Regulators may have capacitors other than just …

Re: Voodoo 5 repair, VSA-100 replacement

Just for curiosity, are these GPU chips you bought original surplus ones, or does some Chinese company manufacture new chips for hobbyists? Original surplus for sure. More than likely after the shutdown of 3DFX manufacturing plants all unused proprietary ICs were sent to be scrapped as e-waste and …

Re: Voodoo 5 repair, VSA-100 replacement

BGA reflow is somewhat simple operation but this machine does more than just heat up the solder. It has prismatic camera aided pick and place function which of course is not needed for ICs this old and large :) It is extremely nice to have when you work on something that has 0,3mm balls and no silk …

Sneak peak video about todays work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnNJn7Ebybw And yes it does, no more green bars. I will put together final video once i get the custom cooling solution machined. Also noticed the card is missing some decoupling capacitors around both GPUs. 10+ years in …
