This is what I run XP on: Intel Xeon E3-1245 V2 Asus P8P67 LE 4GB 1866 MHZ DDR3 (2x2GB) Geforce GTX970 Creative X-Fi 240GB Kingston SSD My advice would be to go with "newish" core i5 or i7 hardware, several generations are fully supported in XP.

3lectr1c thanks again for the tip on the hidden battery. There is definitely evidence of leakage and some minor corrosion on the board where it was connected. I'm in the process of cleaning things up right now and will post some pics later.
