Re: Newly made ISA CGA cards with real 6845s?!

So if they are essentially cloning the IBM CGA card to make an RGBI output in ISA form, it would be great for someone that has a CGA monitor with an old PC. Otherwise, I don't see why they don't just output VGA frequencies or pretty much anything else what people more likely have. They didn't even …

Re: Confirm a question about this forum

The machines people were running dosbox on when it was initially written are now old. There are now many generations of old computers, which many of these machines of the past still work. I think the key is this is a place where people want to keep their games, and their computers, running.

Re: Do you think prices will stay high?

Things are worth the price people pay for it at the time of transaction. Prices fluctuate because of the buyer and seller. I remember the first time I saw the 5162 in the mid 90s. Yes, not particularly common as I had not seen it before then. Someone had bought at least a dozen of them surplus. I …

Re: end of DVD storage

Optical media at this point is long cold storage backup for me. No sense wearing out your drives playing an old game. No sense using it like a floppy drive to transfer files. But these disks are very useful if you understand the methods for archival and recovery the dvdisaster people advertise. Good …

Re: Preparing for POTS sunset: what next?

The funny thing is that there are brand new neighborhoods out here that probably in the last several years got their load of copper installed too. I'm sure they have very good quality DSL that is more reliable, consistent and still faster than wireless. And you can still get phone. It makes no sense …

Re: Preparing for POTS sunset: what next?

So basically, if I am understanding this correctly, I might not even be able to get a landline even if I wanted one? Personally, I think this is a HUGE mistake I'm sure there are places that never had a landline. But even that, there are probably many places now that never had actual POTS. I think …

Re: end of DVD storage

Even though some might choose not to use optical media anymore, there is software to help determine the quality of your optical media. I am not so concerned that all media is no good, because that is unlikely right now. I am only concerned that there are sometimes just simply bad disks made in any …

Re: Preparing for POTS sunset: what next?

I was reading this thread: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=98140 It reminded me of something I found out the other day: The FCC recently stopped requiring telecom companies to maintain their POTS lines, or Plain Old Telephone Service. This sent me into a rabbit hole reading stories from …

Re: cleaning up ;)

Well, get rid of what you are never going to use. I know, I know. I've been there before. Maybe more than just parts for two systems. I had you can say, about a half of a room full, closet full, of stuff. I had to decide if it was worth keeping when moving. I got rid of alot of stuff. Stuff I could …

Re: a little retrospective

This is indeed becoming more common for software not to fully install on your device, and yes large applications have to go through special internet based installer that can change anytime. And for many apps, they are just a browser to a website, so you never really have the actual application, at …
