Diamond Monster Sound MX200 on eBay

in PC Emulation
I'm not sure if anyone will care, but I've identified a neat sound card on eBay. The Diamond Monster Sound MX200 is one of Diamond's early A3D-capable accelerated PCI cards. It also has a MIDI daughtercard equipped with a 4MB Roland patch set and Dream synth. Fun little tidbit: This "Roland" patch …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
Yeah the MX300 is a Vortex 2 PCI card. The DOS driver is really quite compatible. It seems better than what Ensoniq came up with for AudioPCI (and Creative used thereafter for Live!, etc). It doesn't need EMM386. I just wish it did SB16 emulation, but the Aureal engineers claimed in a usenet post …

Re: Need advice on Win9x/DOS Gaming RIG

I didn't mention having a Vortex, so not sure what you mean? It just occured to me after the discussion about NF2 and Win95 above. NF2 can cause problems for Win9x drivers. Vortex is one example I've personally come across. 1) Would there be a need for the Voodoo2? I have looked, but been able to …

Re: Building an Ultimate PCI 486 System

in PC Emulation
It's not really worth putting a Obsidian2 in there. Even a Voodoo1 will be starved by a 486. They really just do not have the oomph to do 3D of that caliber. A Pentium Overdrive would be as best as can be, because it has a much better FPU, but even it would still be super constricted by the 32-bit …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
I've actually given up on the SB16. Believe it or not but the Aureal Vortex SBPro emulation sounds vastly better than the SB16 running in 16-bit mode. I played a bit of OMF2097 last night and it was just night and day! Disgusting quality from that SB16, honestly. It sounded almost mono and just not …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
Hey look it's my scans on Wikipedia. The Elite scan is the busted one I tossed. You can even see the cap I had to add to it because one broke off and got lost! That wasn't why it broke though. It worked for a long time with that ghetto cap. The card just stopped working one day. I think I static- …

Re: Need advice on Win9x/DOS Gaming RIG

nForce 2 has more than one PCI bus, doesn't it? That will cause an issue with Vortex cards in 9x. There's a registry workaround out there, but I'm not sure how reliable it is. To OP: Well, just build something and let us know how it goes. 😀 One can never tell exactly what the best DOS rig will be.

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
Yeah the SB16 CT1740 works fine on my Intel "Venus" VS440FX PPro mobo. The ASUS P5A board has some sort of mysterious issue with MPU-401 ports I guess. It just wouldn't work for Dark Forces. It wasn't a problem for Cybermage though. SCD15 has no problems on the CT1740 either. No stuck notes, missing …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
Eh. lol. So much complexity. We may need like personal DOS hardware experience logs and cheat sheets to remember all this nonsense! Anyway, I've discovered the problem I believe. It's the as-usual shitty Super 7 mobo at work. I put the SCD-15 on my Vortex, which is has worked with before, but DF …

Re: SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
I feel your pain. I'll try to get the time to try out my SB16 (I have at least 3 that I know of, dunno the model # off the top of my head) + SCB-55 on Dark Forces and see what happens. I also have a Soundscape (long board w/o the daughter card add-on, so I guess it's a S-2000?). So I can mess …

Re: SB IRQ

Well if a game is hard-coded for IRQ 7, then it makes sense. Lots of games do seem to default to IRQ 5, however, but they are also re-configurable. And, of course, so is dosbox.conf so it doesn't matter whatsoever. Still an interesting choice to go with IRQ7 and I wondered why.

SB16 CT1740 + SCD15 + Dark Forces = Freeze!

in PC Emulation
So, I ventured forth to eBay to get a CT1740 (an original SB16) so I could be free of PnP and hopefully the stuck note flaw of later SB16s and AWE32s. I got it installed last night and gave it a whirl. All seemed peachy perfect and I had 3 sound cards successfully going at once!!! That was a …

SB IRQ

So, this has perplexed me for a while but I've just accepted it. UNTIL NOW! 😀 My old SBPro defaulted to IRQ 5. SB16 defaults to IRQ5, too. So, why does DOSBOX use 7?

Re: What's the best graphics card for VESA 3.0?

in PC Emulation
Interesting. I might have to give a Radeon a go again. It's too bad that they have issues with some VESA-using games cuz otherwise they are certainly great cards. I have an original Radeon, a 7500, and a 8500 in the great archive drawer at home. I've never been one to go after refresh rate tweaks in …
