Re: Peer-review: Retro-PC gaming system specs

in PC Emulation
I was referring to the DOS VGA core, which is a super fast 128-bit design. DOS Glide support is trickier, but I know there are hacks and other methods to get many older games working. There's a page on the web out there dedicated to getting Tomb Raider running, for example. Undoubtedly the best way …

Re: Demanding games for DOSBOX? *Conroe test*

have you guys seen how unbelievable fast Conroe/Allendale/Merom are for SSE ops? OMG! The thing scores like almost 3x faster than a P4 in the straight SSE test in Sandra. Of course that doesn't happen in real-world stuff, but you can bet that it is indicative of just how seriously they took SIMD in …

Re: Analog modem users.... is still here?

in PC Emulation
I haven't used a modem in 6 years probably. The last one I messed with personally and not for business was a USR Courier I got for $2 and wanted to mess with. Basically, once I got on the WWW and the global Internet in ~1994-5, I gave up almost entirely on dial-up BBS's immediately. But, what do you …

Re: Peer-review: Retro-PC gaming system specs

in PC Emulation
IMO I'd just go with a Voodoo3,4, or 5 instead. The image quality gets a lot better and they are faster of course. And you can save PCI slots, reducing from 3 to 1! And this is a big plus in some old mobos! Nice to be able to throw in a PCI NIC, PCI UDMA100 card, and PCI Sound card too! The Voodoo3 …

Re: My new retro PC

in PC Emulation
I have an Abit BF6 (440BX P2B competitor). In fact, I've had it since 1999 or so. :) Abit BF6 512 MB PC133 CL2 Crucial Celeron-T 1200 @ 1400 Whatever hardware I feel like running lol Actually right now I've got running: FIC VA-503+ MVP3 chipset AMD K6-III+ @ 617 MHz on 112 FSB 256MB PC133 CAS 2 …

Re: (for those who own any) Creative Sound Blaster cards

in DOS
Give these a shot. http://easymamecab.mameworld.net/html/snddosdr.htm The old Ensoniq DOS driver (renamed Creative) may not be perfect, but it does surprisingly work quite well often enough. Re: pure DOS, You could probably rig up a boot floppy or boot CD with a Win98SE boot disk. Just clear off the …

Re: Me again: Voodoo3 2000 PCI crashes Win3.11wfw

in Windows
Well you shouldn't need the latest anything for Win3.11. That OS was built for ISA/VLB video cards, not a 1999-built Voodoo3. :) You should probably just get some old S3-based video card. Trio 64 had drivers for 3.1. To be even more honest, I'd just suggest running 3.1 in VirtualPC. There you can re …

Re: SoundBlaster Live!+Audigy1/2 drivers

in PC Emulation
WDM is less efficient on a hardware level. VXD allows direct hardware access. Undoubtedly WDM is better for stability, however. Basically a bad VXD can do more bad things than a bad WDM. WDMs are more bloated because of the extra compatibility and robustness that MS wanted. I would use VXDs if given …

Re: SoundBlaster Live!+Audigy1/2 drivers

in PC Emulation
for XP and 2K I just use the driver pack Creative supplies on their site for Live!. Has always worked fine for me. I've never seen any sort of tangible gain from those hacked packs, and they often have weird issues with the software apps. Live! is not an Audigy. The processor is not as capable. The …
