Re: New PC - Upgraded to Pentium M

in PC Emulation
You need to overclock the snot out of that rig. I have a P-M 730 1.6 running at 2.13 in my laptop with no voltage boost at all. Insane speed. I can't go any higher because I used a mod to get the FSB to 533 instead of the chips default 400 (insta overclock). You could up the FSB and get some crazy …

Re: The Fastest Processor for DOSBox

I have a Pentium-M notebook. Dell Inspiron 9300. I replaced my Athlon 64 eMachines 6805 with this. It has a Dothan 2.13GHz. 64K L1, 2MB L2. The Dothan runs DOSBOX at least as well as my Athlon 64 3000+ (1.8GHz) 1MB L2 did, probably better. I haven't played a lot of DOSBOX lately. But it runs VERY …

Re: SVGA and VESA Video Cards

in PC Emulation
Radeons have poor VESA support. It's there, but it will frequently lock up or not work at all. As far as I know this includes everything from the original Radeon 256 thru the X850XT PE. ATI wasn't exactly known for vast compatibility with their old DOS products either. I don't know about NV's cards …

Re: SVGA and VESA Video Cards

in PC Emulation
+ET4000 had a VLB version. I had it on my old Hercules Dynamite Power VLB. It was an ET4000/W32p (faster version of ET4000). It was very fast for DOS and good for Windows. It interleaved its RAM for extra speed. Good VESA support, but would need univbe for VESA 2.0. Only VESA 1.2 in hardware. + …

Re: booting Windows 95 - Really :)

BootGUI=0 in msdos.sys, yes. I always set it so I can whip up DOS boot menus. The 9x exe is the same name as Win3.1 too, win.exe (or .com?)... It was funny how MS didn't care that people knew win9x was built on DOS, until WinME when they hid it and in doing so made it a pain in the rear to use in …

Re: phantasmagoria 2 on xp

in Windows
Yeah it's all very ironic because Phantas1 works fine in XP. You can try using VirtualPC or VMWare. Do a virtual Win98 install. But I never got the game to work in native XP. The DOS version uses lower quality video decoding unfortunately.

Re: Dosbox 64 bit mode some day?

I use DOSBOX exclusively on my A64 3000+ notebook. I admit it does run very good, but I haven't tried anything else. Some games do still push it to the limit though, like Dark Forces. It depends on what nasty optimization tricks the game used since most of these tricks deoptimize DOSBOX (lol). TIE …

Re: Dosbox 64 bit mode some day?

The "bittedness" isn't so much the big advantage. Often the biggest advantage for performance for regular users (i.e. don't need dozens of gigs'o'RAM) is the added registers. It lets programmers tune their progs to have faster access to more pieces of critical data. Whether this can help DOSBOX, I …

Re: Gulikoza: Problems with D3D

Ok. It was my fault :) I hadn't turned on fullfixed=true, so my LCD was interpolating from the game's default res's. However, there is still one issue. When aspect=true everything is working fine. 320x200 and 640x480 are scaled to full height at 4:3, so there are black bars on the sides. When aspect …

Re: Questions about fpu

Dark Forces seems particularly demanding. The game uses full 3D objects. I've read it has two 3D engines, one for the environment and another for these 3D objects so I'd imagine it hits the FPU. It really does not benefit at all from dynamic core in the current CVS. There's a demo. http://lucasarts. …

Re: Gulikoza: Problems with D3D

Gulikoza, I gave the new build a try and it looks good! There is still a problem with TIE @ high res in-flight 640x480 where aspect has no effect on the aspect (heh). However, while TIE is in 320x200 the aspect=true does force proper aspect ratio. But hey, it works a ton better than before. No super …

Re: dark forces cdrom

Try installing it thru native Windows instead of DOSBOX and just move the install folder to your DOSBOX folder afterwards. If you do a full install, there's no need for the CD anymore. Here's a guide on how to get it to run without the CD at all. http://www.df-21.net/articles/install.html BTW, …

Re: Questions about fpu

I posted a thread the other day about dynamic core's behaviour in many of the end-of-the-road DOS games, like Dark Forces and X-Wing, etc. They run more consistently and better overall with Normal core for me, on a Athlon64. Dark Forces in particular, with Gulikoza's Feb05 CVS builds, runs a lot …
