Re: Online copies of games are not owned

in Milliways
Steamworks is mostly a non-issue. There's also SteamStub but it seems very few games use it and, at least the older versions, could be removed with a tool. I haven't really checked but apparently epic launcher can also be circumvented. Practically the only non-online protection that is really a …

Re: Videoforte Nvidia NV1 - Anyone have drivers?

I checked the manufacturer's archived website, but the links are dead. https://web.archive.org/web/19990222161947/http://www.mediaforte.com.sg:80/support.htm https://web.archive.org/web/20000302122817/http://www.mediaforte.com.sg:80/supportv.htm Luckily searching by the filename resulted in a match …

Re: 3dtools for banshee

Actually, 3dfx tools are intended for V3 and higher, so the problem with the ref banshee driver is probably normal. Banshee drivers do have their own simpler, built-in control panel but for some unknown reason it simply doesn't work in driver 1.04. Previous versions do.

Re: 3dtools for banshee

No idea why the tool doesn't work with the ref driver, but someone back then combined the two in one package and it works. https://www.oocities.org/bansheedrivers/page3.html https://www.guru3d.com/download/3dfx-banshee-drivers-for-win9x|me/ Run setup.exe to install the tool but after that you might …

Any digital game that you purchase on steam or epic, make sure to make a backup of the installed files. If you get it from gog, go to your account page on the website and download its offline installer. Don't buy stuff from MS store or publisher stores. Don't buy online only games, and if you do, do …

Re: Question about XP Pc

in Windows
I tried using a laptop with 32bit vista on it and it still had massive issues with pre xp games so how can it be usable? The x86 ISA is backward compatible, so the CPU being 64-bit doesn't matter. Vista has issues because of the differences of the OS itself. You'd see the same problems if you …

Re: Upgrade to AWE64, or keep SB16 + Wavetable board?

My research says that the AWE cards are basically SB16s with their own MIDI synthesis built-in, but they need CPU power to use it. AWE32's synthesis is hardware based. Last I checked AWE64 has hardware synthesis for up to 32 voices. The extra 32 are software and rely on the CPU, but you can simply …

Re: NVME partioning advice

in Milliways
NVMe drives ARE SSDs. That's the communication/interface protocol. The form factor is called M.2; there are even SATA M.2 drives. The older form factor is called the same as HDDs, 2.5". As for partitioning, it could be of use like any other drive. I usually create two, OS/programs and data, so that …

Re: "Shader Model 2.0" games released in 2003

Minimum "100% DirectX 9 compatible card" and TNT2 in supported list, haha 😵‍💫 There are a lot of such confused requirements though The game probably needs one or more of DX9b's non-graphics APIs to function. To test you can install it on a system with, say, DX8.1. Just cancel DX9 installation when …
