Well, I cannot just omit the diagnose.exe command. Some games and applications will work anyway (I assume because they read the BLASTER variable) but others fail with IRQ-related error messages or even "Sound Blaster not initialized". It was good, thanks, but after I got a report of error on real hardware, I'm looking for more. Do you remember if you used the dos or windows installer? What driver were you using? Honestly a new test would be better, so that I can submit it with confidence.

I don't think DIAGNOSE is needed at all. What IRQ is the LPT set to in the BIOS? Better set it to 5, or disable it if you don't use it.

One other thought: if all you want to know is the peak memory usage - or better "is the peak memory usage no greater than X" - perhaps you could use the Windows 3.x PIF Editor (look in Program Manager's Main group) to make a .PIF file which restricts the available memory and then see if the game …
