Could you take a picture of the board from the top without cards installed? Also the bottom. Did you thoroughly check the jumpers to be correct according to the manual?

Try deoxit or similar contact cleaner on the bios and keyboard controller (the one with keyboard bios on it) Remove the 287 chip, not needed and rules one more thing out. After a non short while on the internet, the most used method so far is spreadsheets. I don't think that it is the best. Plain Word-like programs are on par or second by not much, ease of use is probably the cause while spreadsheets are good for lists.
