The filesystem type is msdos in OS X. (There ought to be a mount_msdos in /sbin. However, OS X should automatically mount DOS floppies. It sounds as if it isn't recognizing your drive. It has generic USB floppy support, but check the manufacturer's website for drivers. I assume you've already tried …
