Keep Dos 7.1 from win98se. I have not come across 1 game that doesn't work in 7.1 but does in 6.22. Fat32 is much more usefull, also dos7.1 supports int13 Extentions so is limited by bios hd support (up to 2 TB).

After the game is installed the only way to change SFX / music and controls is to run install.exe (it will not install the game again). Also every version of the game I have used (1.32 to 1.37), is multi-language, you can select french, german, english etc.

I solved this btw, in case anyone else runs into this with YMF cards and general midi, you gotta go in to "MS-DOS Mode" and run Dark Forces from there, then all crunch static disappears from the sound.
