OK found the issue: Windows 10 writes a "System Volume Information" folder with a index file if a removable drive, including a floppy disk, like it was a fixed disk. No it was not a professional sound card. Didn't have SIMM slots for memory etc. Just a basic card really. You could also possibly boot from USB if you use the Plop boot manager floppy if you want to save burning an older, less resource intensive, version of gparted or parted magic.

Could you not put the drive in a newer machine and boot CloneZilla from CD/USB and then clone the drive to a working one (maybe even a CF card in an IDE adapter?)
