Re: Would upgrading from a K6-2/400mhz to a K6-3/500mhz result in an appreciable speed increase?

Hi all: just wanted to make a quick post for those who have the same or similar model PC. I've done some research this weekend and it seems that the IBM Aptivas are fairly finicky as to what PCI graphics cards they will accept. There are lots of stories online of people with Aptivas trying various …

Re: PCI Video Card Installation Issues

Id probably recommend trying a geforce 2mx PCI a lota people have had success with it and its very compatible use driver 6.50 you maybe able to get a MX 4series pci card working but I cant recommend that it will 100% work like the geforce 2 mx will and you wont be able to run such old drivers with …

Re: PCI Video Card Installation Issues

Have you tried any other PCI video card beside the Radeon 7000? My worry is that the Radeon 7000 is too new to function in your setup. I know Feipoa and others have tested alot of PCI cards in their 486's (even older that your socket 7), full thread here https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t= …

PCI Video Card Installation Issues

Hi everyone! First of all, thanks to everyone who has helped me out on here - it's been a great learning experience. I have an IBM Aptiva 2158 Series E with a V72MA motherboard, Win98 SE. I have a Radeon 7000 PCI that I'd like to install. I used my friend's PC to determine that the card works, but …

Re: Would upgrading from a K6-2/400mhz to a K6-3/500mhz result in an appreciable speed increase?

One easy final confirmation step: the V72MA has an onboard ATi Rage Pro chip, just next to the M1542 northbridge. If that Rage Pro is there - and there is no AGP slot on the motherboard - we can be 99.9% sure that this is a V72MA. Sure enough, there's an ATI Rage Pro chip next to the M1542. Does …

Re: Would upgrading from a K6-2/400mhz to a K6-3/500mhz result in an appreciable speed increase?

Could you confirm your motherboard? As we're just going by something in your sig with the assumption of V72MA - and I'm not so sure. You posted that your board is So7, not SS7. The V72MA is clearly SS7, with an AGP chipset, 100MHz bus and SDRAM support. So if your board isn't, you probably have …

Would upgrading from a K6-2/400mhz to a K6-3/500mhz result in an appreciable speed increase?

This is a Socket 7 board, so Super Socket 7 isn't available. I have a K6-2/400mhz currently. I saw a K6-3/500mhz on eBay that looks like it's compatible with both Socket 7 and SS7. Would this be a big enough boost to notice or nah? https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-K6-3-K6-2-500-MHz-CPU-500-128-100-2-0v- …

Re: Finding a PCI card that fits

I realize that my original post can be kind of confusing. Below is a photo of the PCI slots. I've also added a photo of the PCI slots with the Radeon 7000 sitting on top... as you can see, the PCI interface on the card is set too far back for this mobo. By looking at the photos, can you tell what …

Re: Finding a PCI card that fits

According to that manual, the 2158 does not have AGP, yet the 2163 does. From what you say, that radeon 7000 card sounds like AGP, which your 2158 does not appear to have, according to the manual. Thank you for pointing that out. I must have misinterpreted it. Do you have any recommendations for …

Finding a PCI card that fits

Hi all. I have an IBM Aptiva 2158 E. It's a Windows 98SE computer. It does have a PCI slot but the slot seems "short" - I tried a Radeon 7000 but the card seems too long, as if it was intended to be used in a motherboard where the PCI interface was set back further from the back of the case. I'm not …
