Re: Best WinXP Video Card

I plan to play Crysis on my 980 Ti, 3770k, X-Fi build under Windows 7. Hopefully at 1440p. I've not played Crysis beyond the first 30 mins or so into the game. Are games that can use DirectX 10 really considered XP games? It's fun to test them, just to see how it does, but I think it can't be the …

Re: Unable to get OEM SB Live to Work in Win98SE

Probably should have, y'know, checked that first. It's the SB0200, the crappy OEM one. Drivers did work, although it's the WDM one and I'd like to find a VXD since this box is mostly for retro gaming and such. It's in an Athlon XP 1700+ system, so at least the lack of hardware acceleration should be …

Unable to get OEM SB Live to Work in Win98SE

I've tried every driver I can find, from PhilsComputerLab, Dell's Website, and of course the official one. No dice. The Creative Diagnostics do see the card, info is below. Device name: - PCI Multimedia Audio Device Hardware location: - Ν.Α. Status: - Device may need re-enumeration. Device requires …

Re: Best WinXP Video Card

A lot of these "best" cards have over 2 GB of VRAM. It's my understanding that in XP pretty much all of them act like they have 2 GB of VRAM if they have more. Is that right? The GTX 960 2GB still feels like the best blend of overkill performance and low price.

GeForce 4 MX 440 in AGP 1 Board - Did I fry it?

I built a system with a Biostar M6TBA V 1.3 and a Pentium 2, and it was working fine with a AGP 1.0 card. I decided to try swapping in a GeForce 4 MX 440 and the system wouldn't start, not even fans. I tried putting the original card back in and it's still a brick - speakers make a brief pop noise …

Re: Headers on Aureal Vortex 2 SQ2500

I used a later driver and got the MPU-401 interface to be visible in the mixer. But...still silence when it's selected in Windows after I unmute it. I don't know what's wrong but it's probably something not working on the hardware or something. I had a similar problem as YOU. No sound from Wave …

Re: Best WinXP Video Card

Why not just run a 780ti which is officially supported on XP? You aren't going to need the extra 1GB RAM of the 970 for anything you plan to run on XP and its more than 10% faster than the 970 too. The 960 and 970 are both quite cheap now and need less power. You can get a 2 GB 960 for $30 and only …

Re: Best WinXP Video Card

The 7900 GS would give you better compatibility with older (pre-WinXP) games, since Nvidia GPUs from the GeForce 7 series still natively support 16-bit dithering. Thief 2 and System Shock 2 are examples of games which need that. Additionally, there are a few edge cases from the WinXP era like …

Re: Best WinXP Video Card

Read through this whole thread with interest - I've been using a Core 2 Duo E8400 overclocked as my XP rig with a 750ti, and it's making me wonder if I should use a different one. I have a 7900 GS in my parts drawer I could use, and the system has the power and (I think) the space for a GTX 285. I …
