There is no documentation declaring what J1 is, but I would assume the J simply designates it to be a Jumper for some purpose. The pins that sit just adjacent to the DSP marked PCPCI are for connecting a motherboard to the card, which allows you to use the card in Real MS-DOS mode.

The general opinion is that you can ditch the MU50 - send it to a good home, please - and will enjoy the swiss army knife functionality of the MU2000EX for all of your XG and GM MIDI uses.

Not dos, but FF7 has actual unique support for XG that is genuine XG use/support. FF VIII too. Played them both with an AOpen Yamaha 754 PCI soundcard. FF8 doesn't really use XG MIDI. That card pooped out after XP, so it's a no-go, unless you can somehow get the generic Microsoft audio driver to work with it. The best thing for you to do is to simply get a newer PCI soundcard or fiddle with the Realtek to see if you can get it working again.
