It worked! I used HimemX to limit the ram to 512mb. The soundfont loaded correctly and I was even able to switch back to having 1gb ram afterwards. Doom sounds much better now.

Good idea. I have 1gb in this machine at the moment. I'll try and find a smaller stick or limit it down to 512mb with HimemX
